Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaking event organizer. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the popular media. She's committed to removing stereotypes of women as they are depicted in pop culture. Additionally she aims to create the awareness of harassment on social media targeted towards women as well as marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from an early age she launched her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. An ambitious woman who wanted to create a web series that examined the representation of gender in video games was targeted by the internet campaign. However the attack could have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist media critic. Her numerous contributions to the field of feminist are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award award-winning journalist. She is also the creator and director of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational organisation that studies pop culture representations of females.
